S L ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ನಾನು…

ಸುಮಾರು ಕನ್ನಡ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನ ಓದುತ್ತಿರುತ್ತೇನೆ, ತೇಜಸ್ವಿ, ಬಿ.ಜಿ.ಎಲ್ ಸ್ವಾಮಿ, ಸುನಂದಮ್ಮ, ಯಂಡಮೂರಿ ಹೀಗೆ… ಹಾಗೆ Novel based ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಿನಿಮಾಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡುತ್ತಿರುತ್ತೇನೆ ಆಗಾಗ.
ಓದುಗ ಮಿತ್ರರು S L ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರ ಕ್ರಿತಿಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾತಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರೆ, ನನಗೆ ನನ್ನ views ಹೇಳಲು ಒಂದು ಕಾಸಿನಷ್ಟು ವಿಷಯವಿರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.. ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ನಾನವರ ಒಂದೂ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಇದುವರೆಗೆ ಪೂರ್ತಿಯಾಗಿ ಓದಿಲ್ಲ. ಅಯ್ಯೋ ಕನ್ನಡತಿ ಯಾಗಿ ಜನ್ಮ ಪಡೆದಿದ್ದೆ waste ಅನ್ನೋ ಅಷ್ಟು ಬೈಗುಳವನ್ನು ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ಮೊನ್ನೆ ಸುವರ್ಣ ಚಾನಲ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ಗಿರೀಶ್ ಕಾಸರವಳ್ಳಿ ಯವರು ನಿರ್ದೇಶಿಸಿರುವ “ನಾಯಿ ನೆರಳು” ಚಿತ್ರ ಬರುತ್ತಿತ್ತು.. ನೋಡಿ ಬಹಳ ಖುಶಿಯಾಯ್ತು. ಹೀಗೆ ಎಲ್ಲರೊಡನೆ ಚರ್ಚಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವಾಗ ಅವರ literary works ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾ, ಅವರ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದಿಸುವಂತೆ ಸೂಚಿಸಿದರು. ಸುಮಾರು ೨೦ ವರ್ಷ್ದವಳಿದ್ದಾಗ ಅವರ ಪರ್ವ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಓದಲು ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಿಸಿದ್ದೆ, ಮೊದಲು ೪ ಪುಟ ಓದುವಷ್ಟರಲ್ಲೆ interest ಹೋಗಿತ್ತು.
ಯಾರೋ ಎಲ್ಲೊ ಹೇಳಿದ ನೆನಪು.. ನೀನೆನಾದರು ಹೊಸ ರುಚಿ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಿಸಬೇಕಾದ್ರೆ ಅದನ್ನು ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿರುವ ಕಡೆ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಿಸು, ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಅದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಚೆನಾಗಿಲ್ಲವೆಂಬ ಆಲೋಚನೆ ಬಂದರೆ, ಇನ್ನೆಂದೂ ಸಹ ಅದರ ನಿಜವಾದ ಸವಿಯನ್ನು ಸವಿಯಲಾರೆ ಅನ್ನೋ ಮಾತು.. ನಾನು ಒಂದಾದರು S L Byrappa ನವರ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಓದೋಣ ವೆಂದು ಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿದೇನೆ. ಮೊದಲಿಗೆ ಯಾವ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದಿದರೆ ಚೆನ್ನ? ದಯವಿಟ್ಟು ತಿಳಿಸಿ. ಹಾಗೆ ಅವರ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಅಬಿಪ್ರಾಯ, ಅಬಿರುಚಿಯನ್ನು ಬರೆಯಿರಿ.

Veena, it’s never too late! I have read most books from the above list. But one which has stayed in my memory is that of Parva – it’s always contemporary. Other novels – one might feel not relevant now but it certainly throws light on the life ‘at that point in time’. You can start with vamsha vriksha – it’s interesting. Parva according to me is greatest of his works. I read somewhere that he is most translated author among Indian writers. His book Parva is very popular among hindi, marathi and bengali readers. There’s English translation of this book too – which I generally gift to non-kannadiga book lovers. They’ve all liked it. Once you read Parva, your view on hindu mythology would change 🙂 Happy reading. I have some of his books. You can take them from me sometime when you’re back in Bangalore.

I have ordered Dharmashree (highly recommended by many people) and also “Parva” (someone recommended). can anyone give a brief review of PARVA, please? Is it as good as Dahrmashree? Also, how easy it is to follow Sri. SLB’s language?
I vaguely remember some fairly harsh cristicism (by many eminent writers such as URA, Girish K etc) of his work, AAVARANA. Has any of you read AAVARANA? If so, how is it?
A little digression: The book YAYATI by Girish K is supposed to be a great work (although many people has criticised it for misrepresenting facts). Where can I buy the KANNADA version of YAYATI? Sapna does not have it. I am looking for an ONLINE store.

well the class of SLB can never be compared with that of URA and karnad. Lot of research goes behind SLB’s work, in AAVARANA there are harsh realities of our gone by past, which none of the modern litereary works never dared to show to the society. But SLB work is highly commendable, instead of going by critisicm i advice you to taste the very truth by reading AAVARANA. There are people who believe in “SIDDHI=work” and there are people who beleive in “PRASIDDHI=fame”. SLB belongs to the first class whereas URA and Karnad types belong to Second class. Go ahead and read AAVARANA

it is true… to say truth it needs guts… only SLB is having that…
SLB novels not only reads us , it gives us the reality of life and reality of history and become guide to our real life. People who loves SLB inside (like OSHO) also criticizes out side just bcz to identify themselves. It needs a lot of lot of Guts to accept real facts for us.

Parva I had read when I was in highschool, I read in college, I read when I started working – and everytime it seems so new and all the more relevant.

Aavarana is the most controversial of Bhairappa’s works. If you enjoy reading Pratap Simha’s writing on Muslims – you would enjoy reading this! But if you belong to U R Anantamurty’s school of thought you would hate aavarana to the core 🙂

Bheemakaaya and Dharmashree are Bhyrappa’s early write-ups. Author has suggested so many times that they are not great pieces but once you read them, you will find how modest bhyrappa is.
VNS: Dharmashree is definitely good read, but parva is a master piece. This is the best novel in whole of kannada literature. If parva has not got Gnanapeetha award, It means that, Gnanapeetha is not worth it.
SLB’s language is rather pretty simple, but if you are an avid reader of Saisute, Usha Navaratnaram, SLB’s language might look very tough.
On criticism, you are right, all the other ass-hole writers, literary pimps suggested ‘Aavarana’ as bullshit!. Compared to other works of bhyrappa, this was not a great piece of work. If you have read Kushwanth singh’s ‘Dilli’, you may not appreciate much about ‘Aavarana’. But it was a good read to me.
Veena: Take any book of bhyrappa, all his books are printed in last page of the novel in the chronological order. If you have difficulty in finding, I will add the list.

Very interesting discussion. Bhairappa, I started reading his books an year ago, with Aavarana and how they got me hooked …. I dont know and I cant explain. I have read five of his novels since then, all are master pieces. I feel Thabbaliyu neenade magane has been one of the best novels I have read so far or heard of in any language!
I need to read more books of him. Yes, I agree with Girish that if Bhairappa has not Gyaanpeeth award, then the award is the loser, not the writer. In Kannada today, if there is anyone worth this award, then it should be Bhairappa. I am sure like the other legends, DVG, PuTiNa, K S Na, Adiga and others, Bhairappa may go awardless, nevertheless Kannadigas know what a gem of a writer he is and how they love his works. Yes, if DVG who gave us a literary masterpiece such as “ಮ೦ಕುತಿಮ್ಮನ ಕಗ್ಗ” (ಕನ್ನಡದ ’ಭಗವದ್ಗೀತೆ’) does not get an award, it only means that such an award is too SMALL to really honour such great personalities. Even Mahatma Gandhiji went awardless (all awards were too small to measure his greatness)..so PUTINA, DVG and and some others are in good company!!!

@ Anand, Thanks for the corrections and suggestions. Dharmashree seems to be a good pick. Gubbachi and Girish’s comments endorse it too. I remember watching another ETV serial on Grihabhanga, where MaaLavika (Madhavi paTel fame) and Achyuta Rao were the main cast. It was marvellous though I couldn’t watch all the episodes.
@VNS, Thanks for the title. Have added it. Please check Radhika’s comment. Totalkannada might be of some help. I have heard lot about “Ankita prakashana”. And also there is one in Nrupathunga road, good kannada books are available there. I think the book shop belongs to kannada raastrothaana parishat …
@Radhika, Thanks for the suggestion. Looks like you are an avid reader of SLB’s literary works. My GOD, reading Parva would change my perception about Hindu mythology? It sounds revolutionary.. I would definitely read it, but after a while. Great to know that his books are translated in many other languages.. I miss your Radio program bookworm, BTW.. did you talk about any of the SLB’s book there? as the purpose of the radio program was to introduce new/good books … I was remembering that book from Maxim Gorki – “The Mother” when I was watching a TV program about the newly released movie(Baragur ramachandrappa) Taayi (PramiLa Joshai in Lead role).

@VNS, I think we need to have a separate post to discuss on DVG’s mankutimmana kagga. I keep hearing it atleast once in 6 months. Specially those 7 Audio casettes from Swamy Chimayananda (I am searching for the same in CD but haven’t been able to get it).. Awesome, I enjoy it more than any other “Chintane” type of books!
When I hear them, I remember that program in AkashaVaaNi which used to come in the early morning, they used to talk about such pearls about life.

@Veena, so you have lot of books to read now! Ask people for suggestions and you would get them in plenty – there’s so much joy to share what one knows isn’t it?
Best way to make time for reading is to travel in office cab :).
By the way, I have mankutimmana kagga’s CD (Chinmaya mission) – I can make a copy for you sometime.
But somehow, I always prefer to read mankutimmana kagga than listenting to the discourse 🙂

@Ananad, I heard from the shopkeeper in vijayanagar that there is case in court about the rights to sell the CD – not sure how far it is true. So just out of goodwill that he said he is giving it (I’m a regular visitor to his shop and he gives discount on CD’s 🙂 ) . But I can certainly burn the CD and give it – but how is the question!

@Neelanjana, Thanks for the tip about holding on first 20-25 pages! True many a times, here is when we loose interest to read the book! I remember watching that movie Tabbali neenade magane long back (That guy who have done in Pallavi Anupallavi (laxmi’s ex-husband) is in lead role in the movie TNM).

Specially I get to see lot of happenings out the world fun at time, jagaLa and the traffic light jumpers idella.. and also I take out some time to attend all the missed calls during my journey. Its true Disha. I was not at all intrested in literature untill one day I took a book from my brothers’ book shell, just to spend time just like that. I was amazed and deeply fell in love with literature. the book which inspired me towards literature was SLBs’ Saartha. I feel as if SLB is narrating my own life story.

SLB is an all time great and he is one who spends lot of time before he puts them into writing. his master piece parva was carved out after lot of research and no. of visits to places relevant. his novels are simply different from others and you can not run through them you need t o involve and concentrate and read. I have read no. novels of him right from dharmashree, tabbaliu ninade magane, datu, parva to name a few.

In my house we had collection of all his novels one time but today not even a sinnle is available thanks to pustaka priyaru ( close to family both relatives & friends) after borrowing for reading it is though book is theirs and they circulate or what they do I am not sure. but books have not come back. One way I think it has spread re reading of Byrappas novels to many so what is our loss is gain fro kannada sahitya but is it is loss to byrappa had they bought and read they would have benefitted.
He is a very simple person and all his books are published by SAhitya Bhandar originally from Hubli (founded by one late Sri Mangalore Govinda RAo a fclose friend of my father) and today they are in bangalore also for last more than 3 decades and all byrappas works have been published by them. byrappa also has stood with them because they are the one who published his early novels once he got fame so many others have offered him lucrative offers but he has stood with them and even today he is with son of the founder. so that shows the commitment and greatness of the person not forgetting the people who have helped him when he needed it badly and stood with them all through.and sahitya bhandara publishes and also sells only kannada books thats is simply great.

I started reading DHRMASHREE (less number of pages compared to PARVA) as my FIRST SLB novel. It is quite interesting. It has so much information. One revelation was the subtle sense of humour that SLB possesses. It shows in many places. I am sold on SLB’s work. Next in line is PARVA. I will follow it up with some of the other “MUST READ” novels.

I am not sure of the title of the book….in that the girl wants to marry the boy(very intelligent), but the boy always gives a very hi-fi lecture on compatibility & how their futre will be and so on..and will keep on dodging the girl. SLB has portaryed the “Buddhi jeevi” fantastic, & how they unnecessarily complicate thier life….
can anybody tell me the name of the book….?
I want to read that again.

Bhyrappa was too young while writing this novel. In bhitti (his autobiography) he has revealed that he had few girls in his college life but it was pure friendship with them!!!
I think he has developed Ananda from what he was in this novel.
The charecters of Uma and Vasantha have been brought so nicely to show that, if you get to solve the problems of philosophy: you end up in a soup and your life will be shattered.
Vinutha is a typical girl and plays with Anand, ruins his life, get her life on to the brink and finally dies (Movie style)
Jagadamba is so good friend to many and has very happy ending.
Novel is a good read but very low if you rank bhyrappa’s novels. the best part is that it was written by bhyrappa in his 20’s. when I read it in my teens, it sounded great. after reading other novels and re-reading it again, makes you feel ok.

@Girish, Ha Ha…philosophy does help many times but its hard to apply while dealing with relationships.. we never know if the other person accepts it in the same degree…

Thanks for the responses and the interactions we had on this post. Well, I have purchased two books of SLB namely Dharmashree and Naayi neraLu. Will start reading now and will post my first feel/views on it.
While discussing with Radhika about SLB’s literary works(or generally books) she said that we can probably write a post which talks about a book which one can recommend giving the gist of the story/insight.
I was thinking that we will give options to write guest post in this regard.. So please let me know if any of you are interested to write a blogpost on a book.. Probably we can write such post per month so that we recommend a book for each month. First, lets restrict this to books in kannada.
Many of you must be knowing the bookworm program on Radio that spoke about books.

the only book I have ready authored by SLB was Saartha several years ago I borrowed one from my roommate back then. It was a great book – I specially focused on the power of meditation. I wanted to buy few kannada book during my recent bangalore visit, I didn’t get a chance spend more time at the book stores. however, I went to Ankita Pustaka (gandhibazaar) and picked up a bundle of T.P.Kailasam’s stories. I liked the TPK’s books that we had as part of our curriculum in PUC so wanted to get the entire set. I am currently reading “makkaLigskool manelalve” in that set.
Anybody read TPKailasam’s books?

Hi there.
Lately, I read almost all works of Kailasam. Like his wit especially. ‘Poli Kitti’ is moving. ‘Amavra Ganda’ is fun. ‘Tollu Gatti’ is ok and it is with this that he revolutionised Kannada drama. ‘Soole’ is a little serious and good work. Well, but what suprised me ( and what hooked me ) is his English works, I knew he studied in Oxford, but still his English mastery is incredible. They are first-class. I recommend you to read “Purpose”, which is a beautiful rendering of Arjuna-Ekalavya encounter, “Bhramin’s Curse”, which is a heart-wrenching story of Karna, “Fulfilment”, a dialogue between Krishna and Ekalavya. And his poems. He writes like a native speaker and even surpasses them!
Give me a shout if you like to carry on this.

I remember that Makkalige school Manelalve alias Poli kiTTi and the characted KiTTi is most remembered one alva? Almost 13 years back I read it in my PU curriculum so don’t really remember that so clearly.
So as a start, probably you can write on TPK’s this book and recommend it to other book lovers. TPK has lot of contributions to the kannada literature.. I have only 2 book of his. ToLLu gaTTi and one more which I am unable to recall.
Also offlate I wanted to go to a play based on his write up Huttadalli hutta. Its still a plan 🙂

What is the novel “Tantu” about?
I have read all novels of Byrappa except Tantu and Mandra. One thing I like from Byrappa is, once you finish reading the novel, you try to map yourself with one of the characteristics of the novel. He doesn’t give you a definite end to his novels. Once the reader finishes the novel, he will automatically think about end.

Just now I finished Tantu. I lived with all characters, I experienced. It enraged me, it would give me hope only to shatter it in next moment, it disconcerted me. Very ambitious novel. Similar to “War and Peace” by Tolstoy in its breadth and scope. So a little tough going. A marathon. Well, here’s a accurate summary of it I found somewhere:
In this epic novel, Bhyrappa examines the very fibre of contemporary Indian life – social, political and psychological – basically in terms of post- independence, post-Gandhian scene. It is panoramic in scope, moving as it does from Bangalore a small village near Channarayapattana, to Mysore, to Banaras and Delhi. Police brutality, goondaism at the village level, the phoney five-star hotel culture, the theft of art objects and smuggling them out of the country, betraying a great heritage for monetary benefit by mercenaries – thus the novel progresses relentlessly. The ubiquitous corruption, bribery and nepotism in high places as well as in low places is portrayed with such absolute candour and honesty that the steady erosion of traditional values and the rank philistinism that has enveloped the present day life is shown as eating away the very moral fibre of India today. The range of characters, entirely credible is incredible and astonishingly comprehensive – the true Gandhian idealist, who, in spite of all odds holds on to his ideals an honest and uncompromising journalist-editor, who, in spite of personal tragedy remains steadfast to his professional ethics, demonstrating that he cannot be bought, no matter what the price, the “liberated” career woman who sleeps around in order to gain favours in business, the academic-politician with a carefully cultivated charm seducing gullible and impressionable young women etc. All in all, it is simply a fascinating novel about modern India – surveying as it does the state of the country from Mahatma Gandhi to Indira Gandhi ending with the emergence of the “Emergency”.

Can you give me a jist of “Tabbali Neenade Magane”. I have vague memories of the storyline of a movie when I was around 8-years old with Punyakoti song. Just want to confirm if that is Tabbali Neenade magane. Well, it’s about the differences in the way the people who are steeped in Indian tradition and the people who are influenced by western culture, who have their Indian roots shaken a large extent see the life: how it should be led and what should it’s relationship with the world. The brutality of ‘reformers’ who wants to change everything overnight and the lethary and indifference of common people is the gist of this novel. A vivid, very close up portrait of the lives of main character gives it an idyllic flavour. Don’t know about the English version. Speaking for myself, it’s a pity to read original works in other languages. You’d miss the subtleties.

@Pratima, you can check with Sapna/Ankita for the kannada book. No idea if the book is translated to English. The story is about a foreign returned son of a villager who owns herds of cows. The son’s wife is white who eats the cows which is holy for the mother of this guy. The conflicts between the mother, son and his wife about the cow, the mother’s beliefs etc runs in the story.

I have read many books written by Dr.Bhairappa. All are great books. Vamsha Vruksha was the first one followed by Tabbali Ninade Magane, Naayi Neralu, Dharmashree, Avarana, Bhimakaya etc. I really think he is one of the best writers in Kannada.

I started with Parva, then finished Matadaana, Aavarana, VamshaVruksha, Naayi Neralu and few more on my shelf (Mandra, Saakshi, Dhatu, GruhaBanga) which I am yet to finish reading them….IMO each time I read his book the respect for this author increases You just cant read few of his books…if like the style one would end up reading all of his books for sure…
I cant pick one best book yet…one is better than than other…
Aavarana Stands out for its research efforts, content and present day situation.

sapna book house ( Majestic/Koramangala etc and ankita prakashana are the best places to buy SLB and other writer’s good kannada books.
SLB’s recent books Kavalu, Yaana broke records in sales of kannada books which reprinted several times with in the span of few months.
Even Parva , Bhitti, Dharmashree and Thabbaliyu……( which I have read many times and reads whenever I feel reading it) and all other books of SLB are regularly reprinted due to vast demand. As per my knowledge Parva and other his works are hugely popular in Gujararti apart from Hindi, bengali and other languages, not to foget Marathi where he is equally popular as in Kannada literary world. I great writer indeed and last month I was disppointed when this year also he didn’t get Jnanapith award ( awarded to a noted Gujarati writer).

I started reading with SLB’s books with “Dharmashree”. Actually it was a boon in disguise, if I had started of with some other heavy novel, may be I would have discontinued. After that superb “Dharmashree”, I have read most of them, bu the recent ones I have read most of them. Gruhabanga I would have read many times. And it is not Dhathu, it is Dhatu( “Tha” alla “Ta”) 🙂
@Veena , now I think you know my suggestion on which book to start with 🙂
