Muktha Balaga

Though some friends were missing, still it was a good sized gang with lots of nice fun! Bellur and family was the first to arrive, and later joined by Usha, Srik, and later on Divya and Vasuki as well! Hadn’t played carrom for years and soon we got back in form (and out of it again as well) but somehow we managed to play a few boards 🙂 Had some light snacks and later on was joined by Dwaraka as well on his new really cool bicycle. Chaitanya, Prof and Tiger Pran unfortunately could not make it, so also Teacher was missing in action this time on Teacher’s Day! Some of us visited Usha’s house later on before winding up for the day. Though venue was in indoors in the comfort of one of their homes, there was no question of host or guest and it was merely a venue 8) It was a very relaxing evening, and there’s just no substitute in the world for good friends!

If we ignore who said this and when, but just look at the statements as  they are…

ದಯವೇ ಧರ್ಮದ ಮೂಲವಯ್ಯdayave dharmada muulavayyaCompassion is the root of Dharma
ಆಸಯೇ ದುಖದ ಮೂಲaasaye dhukkhada muula –  Attachment is the root cause of misery

These two statements seem to be different but concur at the root. Because real compassion can only be achieved after going beyond attachment. Freedom from misery is real Dharma.

Any other comments or similar quotes…? 🙂

One of the youngest Mukthabalaga members wishing everyone

a very very bright and illuminating Deepawali! 🙂

An underlying theme on Deepawali is the second line of the Vedic hymn…

Om Asatoma Sadhgamaya

Tamasoma Jyotirgamaya

Mrityoma Amritamgamaya

that says “Lead us from darkness to light”

A question… who will lead us from darkness to light?

Google returned some ‘illuminating’ 😉 quotes on light…

Who is more foolish, the child afraid of the dark or the man afraid of the light? ~Maurice Freehill

Better to light a candle than to curse the darkness. ~ Chinese Proverb

People are like stained-glass windows.
They sparkle and shine when the sun is out,
but when the darkness sets in their true beauty is revealed
only if there is light from within.

~Elisabeth Kübler-Ross

Fear grows in darkness;
if you think there’s a bogeyman around, turn on the light.

~ Dorothy Thompson

An age is called “dark,” not because the light fails to shine
but because people refuse to see it.

~James Michener

Beauty is not in the face;
beauty is a light in the heart.

~Kahlil Gibran

It is said that history repeats itself. It is not history that repeats itself; it is the unconsciousness of man, the blindness of man that repeats itself. The day man will be conscious, alert and aware, there will not be any repetition anymore. Socrates will not be poisoned, Jesus will not be crucified, Al-Hillaj Mansoor will not be murdered and butchered. And these are our best flowers, they are our highest peaks. They are our destinies, they are our future. They are our intrinsic potential which has become actual.

~ Osho

Light gives of itself freely, filling all available space.
It does not seek anything in return; it asks not whether you are friend or foe.
It gives of itself and is not thereby diminished.

~Michael Strassfeld

~ Suresh G

As the Buddha was dying, Ananda asked who would be their teacher after death.
He replied to his disciple…

Be lamps unto yourselves.
Be refuges unto yourselves.
Take yourself no external refuge.
Hold fast to the truth as a lamp.
Hold fast to the truth as a refuge.
Look not for a refuge in anyone besides yourselves.
And those, Ananda, who either now or after I am dead,
Shall be a lamp unto themselves,
Shall betake themselves as no external refuge,
But holding fast to the truth as their lamp,
Holding fast to the truth as their refuge,
Shall not look for refuge to anyone else besides themselves,
It is they who shall reach to the very topmost height;
But they must be anxious to learn.

Navadarshanam (new vision) is the collective effort of a group of concerned professionals who, after a decade of study, introspection and dialogue, had come to realize that:

  • people all over the world today are caught in the dangerous, swirling, currents of the materialistic, urban industrial way of life.
  • alienation of the individual from self, nature, and the Creative Power is going hand in hand with societal disintegration and ecological destruction.

This Trust was formed in 1990 to provide faciilites and a forum to come out of this cycle of disintegration and alientation by changing our thinking , actions and lifestyle.

Navadarshanam (“new vision”) is a charitable trust, devoted to exploring and adopting holistic and natural ways of fulfilling inner and outer needs, including alternative energy and farming technology.
Today, our hosts are three of the founders, Jyoti, Ananthu and Om.  They will guide us on today’s tour of the farm, the technology, and tell us how Navadarshanam (Nd) is bringing new life to this once barren hillside.

Virtual Tour

They do welcome visitors, as long as we plan a day and intimate them well in advance.  We definitely must have our next (or one of the subsequent) balaga meets here! I’ve been really curious, but have myself been postponing a visit to this for quite a long time!

Usha, I’m sure that you’ll like this! 🙂 There’s an article about them here…

Nowadays its quite common to take videos using a mobile, and upload them on the net. They’re a new way of expression beyond still picture of the camera.

You can post the links to your videos here. Videos and comments on the videos invited! 🙂
