If we ignore who said this and when, but just look at the statements as they are…
ದಯವೇ ಧರ್ಮದ ಮೂಲವಯ್ಯ – dayave dharmada muulavayya – Compassion is the root of Dharma
ಆಸಯೇ ದುಖದ ಮೂಲ – aasaye dhukkhada muula - Attachment is the root cause of misery
These two statements seem to be different but concur at the root. Because real compassion can only be achieved after going beyond attachment. Freedom from misery is real Dharma.
Any other comments or similar quotes…?

Both the sayings convey the same thing. This is one of the basic tenets of Bhagavadgita.
Do your duty without selfishness or attachment. The duty factor here is extended to doing non duty activities also which help the world.
